Associate Professor of African and African Diaspora Studies and American Studies Dr. Shirley Thompson has been selected, by the Texas Exes, as one of The University of Texas at Austin’s Top Ten Professors of 2017! From the more than 75 nominated educators, past and present, across the disciplines, the list was culled down to the 10 most deserving professors of 2017,and Dr. Thompson was among them!

Dr. Thompson has been at UT Austin for 15 years and, as a researcher, had to learn to love the art of teaching. According to Dr. Thompson, it was her students’ enthusiasm and passion for learning that helped her to love standing at the front of the lecture hall. The courses taught by Dr. Thompson over the years include: Property in American Culture; Paradigms for African American Studies; Race, Law, and US Society; Black Representations of the South; Slavery Across the Genres; Cultural History of the US to 1865.

Currently, Dr. Thompson is working on a book project titled No More Auction Block for Me: African Americans and the Problem of Property, which traces out some of the legacies of slavery for African American encounters with property and ownership. Specifically, it explores the interwoven concepts of race and property value from the vantage point of African American historical memory, political economy, and expressive culture.
