AADS welcomes three new faculty members this fall: Drs. Mónica Jiménez, Nicole Burrowes, and Abimbola Adelakun!

Dr. Mónica Jiménez, currently Visiting Assistant Professor in the Departments of History and Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will serve as Assistant Professor of AADS at UT, teaching courses in the areas of Latin American and Caribbean History and Law. Dr. Jiménez’s academic research explores the intersections of law, race, and nationalism in U.S. empire building in Latin America and the Caribbean. She has received fellowships in support of her work from the Ford Foundation, the Puerto Rican Studies Association, the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School, and The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Nicole Burrowes, Presidential Postdoctoral fellow in the History Department at Brown University, will join Dr. Jiménez as a new AADS Assistant Professor. She has been awarded a Fall 2017 College Research Fellowship from UT's College of Liberal Arts and will begin teaching in her research area, Black Diaspora Caribbean and Latin American History, in the spring. Dr. Burrowes' scholarly interests include comparative histories of racialization and colonialism, social movements, transnationalism, intersectionality, and the politics of solidarity. 

Serving as AADS' Yoruba Lecturer for the 2017-18 academic year is Dr. Abimbola Adelakun, a recent Ph.D. recipient from UT Austin's Department of Theatre and Dance. Dr. Adelakun's scholarly interests include Performance Activism and Social Change, Transatlantic Black Identity, and Yoruba/Nigeria Performance Aesthetics. In addition to teaching Beginning Yoruba in Fall 2017, Dr. Adelakun will offer AFR 304: Introduction to the Study of Africa, as well as AFR 317: East Austin Ethnography in Spring 2018.
