Undergraduate Scholarships in Classics

The Department of Classics is honored to have a wealth of scholarship money to award each year.  Scholarships are restricted to declared undergraduate majors. Scholarship applications occur annually midway through the spring semester.

Any scholarship below may be sometimes be awarded to more than one student, depending on the pool of applicants. All scholarships can be applied to either the long session or to summer study, depending on the student’s needs.

William James Battle Scholarship in Classical Languages

Donor: Commander Robert Eikel Jr., United States Navy, 1945
Amount: up to $1000.

Eligibility: Any undergraduate major in Classics, Latin, Greek, or Ancient History and Classical Civilization who shows a sufficiently good knowledge of Greek or Latin to justify that he/she will help further the study of Classics. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Classics Department.

Bestor Scholarship in Classics

Donor: Anonymous

Amount: $5000
            
Eligibilty: Any undergraduate student who has taken at least two courses in either Greek or Latin in the Department.  Preference will be given to students also majoring in Plan II and/or who intend to take further courses in Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, Ancient History or Classical Archaeology.

Velma Box Scholarship in Classics

Donor: E.O. Box Jr., and the Phillips Petroleum Company
Amount: up to $750.

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Classics. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Classics Department.

James W. Edwards and Nancy T. Snyder Scholarship in Classics

Donor: Alexander A. Bueno-Edwards, Dudley R. Snyder, and John C. Snyder, 2007

Amount: up to $1000.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students in Classics. Preference is given to majors in Ancient History and Classical Civilization. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Classics.

Ruth and Myron G. Kuhlman Scholarship in Classics

Donor: Myron G. Kuhlman
Amount: up to $1,500.

Eligibility: Undergraduates majoring in Classics, Greek, Latin, or Ancient History and Classical Civilization. Preference is given to students planning a career teaching Latin. The award is made on the basis of academic excellence, need, and the student's potential for a productive teaching career. Minimum requirements are sixty semester hours of undergraduate credit, a grade point average of 3.00, and a grade point average in Latin of 3.5. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Classics Department.

Mildred Masters McCarty Scholarship in Classics

Donor: Mildred M. McCarty, 1979
Amount: up to $1300.

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Classics. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Classics Department.

Professor Lucy Taxis Shoe Meritt Memorial Scholarship Fund in Classical Archaeology

Donor: Numerous donors, in memory of Lucy Shoe Meritt
Amount: up to $1000.

Eligibility: Undergraduate who will participate in (Denton) Alex Walthall's Morgantina summer excavation project.

Lourania Miller Scholarship in Classical Languages

Donor: Mrs. Lourania Miller, by bequest, 1961
Amount: up to $1000.

Eligibility: Undergraduates majoring in Classics, Greek, Latin, or Ancient History and Classical Civilization. Awarded on the basis of merit and need by the Scholarship Committee of the Classics Department.

Gareth Morgan Scholarship

Donor: Numerous donors, in memory of Gareth Morgan, 1996 and after
Amount: up to $2000.

Eligibility: Any undergraduate major in Classics, Latin, Greek, or Ancient History and Classical Civilization. Preference is given to students who wish to use the money to study in the Department's Summer Intensive Greek program.

William Christian Smith, Jr. Scholarship

Amount: up to $2000.

Eligibility: Any undergraduate major in Classics, Latin, Greek, or Ancient History and Classical Civilization.
