4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Grupo Flor y Canto cordially invites everyone to attend their spring educational event, Fandango 2010.
Fandango 2010 will include music, dance, refreshments, games and prizes. Refreshments and prizes have been generously provided by the University Co-Op.
Demonstrations will include:
DANZA DE LA PINATA:: Both the Spanish missionaries & the indigenous peoples in the Americas had traditions of celebrating religious events with a game involving a clay pot and a stick.
CONTEMPOARY DANCE WORKS featuring the CMAS students of Maestro Roen Salinas of the UT Department of Theatre and Dance.
SON JAROCHO: Sones jarochos are African-influenced songs from southern Veracruz with syncopated rhythmic patterns.
SON HUASTECO: Son huasteco is the term associated with the huapango rhythm and features violin and guitar instrumentation with highly improvisational text, often structured around the Spanish décima form. The word “huapango” is derived from the Náhuatl term cuauh-panco, which means “to dance on a wooden platform,” demonstrating links to its Aztec past.
LAS SEVILLANAS:: Andalusians dance the sevillanas during ferias and anywhere else that there is a gathering.

Sponsored by the University Co-op; Dr. Juan C. González; RecSports; the Department of Spanish and Portuguese; the Center for Mexican American Studies; Roén Salinas; UT Ballet Folklorico; and Grupo Flor y Canto.
