"Chicanidad In Yancuic Tlahtolli: Nina Marie Martínez’s Caramba as Chican@ Codex."

Tracing the formal and literary endurance of the pre-colonial Mesoamerican Huehuetlahtolli, or “discourses of the elders,” Miguel León-Portilla identifies in contemporary Indigenous Mexican writings a “Yancuic Tlahtolli,” “the new word.” In this portfolio plática, Lydia French reads a contemporary Chicana novel, Nina Marie Martínez’s ¡Caramba!: A Tale Told in Turns of the Card (2004) as a reactivation of the Mesoamerican codex form that documents Chican@ belonging as a set of iterative, accumulative, and sometimes contradictory practices.
