Creative Spaces of Resistance: Arte, Activism and Youth Opposition to Urban Injustice in East Austin

Historical segregation, environmental injustice, and gentrification comprise some of the powerful subject matter of East Austin youth activist artwork.  An analysis of historical and contemporary city planning in Austin, TX will show similarities to larger national trends in urban development leading to the displacement of low-income communities and communities of color.  This portfolio plática by Amanda Gray includes a screening of the short documentary Creative Dispossession, which provides viewers an opportunity to observe firsthand the relevance of youth creative expressive culture in activism and the importance of activism in providing a voice to neglected communities of color in Austin.
