Fri, October 26, 2012 | Garrison Hall, First Floor Conference Room
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Please join us on Friday, October 26, from noon to 1PM in the first-floor conference room of Garrison Hall, when Professors Robert Olwell and Jacqueline Jones will conduct an informal conversation with Mr. Henry Wiencekabout his provocative new book, Master of the Mountain: Thomas Jefferson and His Slaves, just published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Mr. Wiencek is the author of a number of books about American history, including An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003); and The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White (St. Martin’s Press, 2000), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
In a review in the Washington Post, Jonathan Yardley calls Master of the Mountain “a brilliant examination of the dark side of the man who gave the world the most ringing declarations about human liberty, yet in his own life repeatedly violated the principles they expressed.” For that review, and another posted on Salon.com, see below.
Beverages and dessert will be provided.
