Biography


 

Karin Gwinn Wilkins (PhD, University of Pennsylvania, 1991) is Professor with the Department of Radio-TV-Film at the University of Texas at Austin, Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Chair of the Global Studies Bridging Disciplines Program. 

Wilkins’ research focuses on development and international communication, as well as media and social change. Some of her work can be found in ReDeveloping Communication for Social Change (Rowman & Littlefield, 2000), Communication Theory, Media, Culture & Society, Journal of Communication, International Journal of Public Opinion Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Media Development, Media Asia, Journal of International Communication, Peace Review, and the Asian Journal of Communication, among other venues.

If we are to improve our attempts to address serious global problems and resolve devastating conflicts, we must re-evaluate development communication as a practice and as an approach. Development communication involves the strategic application of communication technologies and processes to resolve social problems. This course surveys the field of development communication, from its historical conceptions within the US toward its current practice in developing countries.
