Indexicality and voice quality in a French-English bilingual
This presentation serves to motivate the study of creaky voice as a sociophonetic variable in the speech of French-English bilinguals.  This non-modal phonation type has fairly recently emerged as a culturally-salient variable indexing an array of social attributes in English; however, the variable has not been similarly reported for speakers of French.  Furthermore, past studies on the phonetic outcomes of codeswitching have not been extended to voice quality or, for that matter, to any variable holding such a high level of indexical power in one of a bilingual’s component languages.  This project thus seeks to contribute to this discussion through a case study of production data from a young female French-English bilingual speaker living in the United States, finding no significant difference in the use of creaky voice across all language environments.

Showing the Voice and Voicing Silence: Resistance in Ousmane Sembene's Black Girl (1966)

In this presentation I will talk specifically about the protagonist of the film Diouana who has come to France from Senegal, in order to work as a maid for a French couple. As she gradually becomes  a slave more than a maid, I will demonstrate how, simply through the use of voice and silence, Sembene gradually builds up his character’s ability to assert herself as a subject , and expresses a form of resistance that is often neglected.

DP-Internal Arabic-French codeswitching: A Comparison of community norms

This project begins as a description comparison of Arabic-French codeswitching in two countries: Morocco and Tunisia. Once the possible patterns are identified, the social implications are then examined.
