Federal requirements for J-1 Exchange Visitors have changed as of January 5, 2015. Please review this page to be aware of your responsibilities as a J-1 Exchange Visitor.

The U.S. Department of State requires that program sponsors (The University of Texas at Austin) verify the English language proficiency for each J-1 student and scholar. Foreign visiting research affiliates will be required to meet an English Proficiency Requirement.

In addition, For insurance, the U.S. Department of State regulations require all J-1 Exchange Visitors to have insurance for themselves and any accompanying J-2 family members for the duration of their program. Scholars can purchase insurance in their home country, through a private insurance company, or AHP/BCBS here at the International Office. They can purchase insurance now or wait until arrival in the U.S. but they will need to provide proof of insurance that meets the coverage requirements within 3 days of attending J-1 Orientation, which they should schedule upon your arrival. The insurance requirements have recently changed, this website provides information on the new requirements: http://world.utexas.edu/isss/insurance/vs-overview. Scholars interested in purchasing medical insurance from the Academic Health Plans/BlueCross BlueShield (AHP/BCBS) insurance company may refer to the link below for information about coverage and premiums. They can make an appointment upon arrival with our Insurance Advisor at UT Austin's ISSS: http://world.utexas.edu/isss/insurance/appts.
