Thu, January 31, 2008
The College of Liberal Arts Dean Randy Diehl and History Department Chair Alan Tully will celebrate the founding of the Institute for Historical Studies in conjunction with the History Department's return to a newly renovated Garrison Hall in the Main Building (Tower), Room 212, starting at 4 p.m.- 7 p.m.
The History Department will also present a showcase of events to celebrate the re-opening of Garrison Hall on February 1. There will be lectures, exhibits, and faculty-guided tours of exhibits at the various museums and centers on campus. They will also announce the beginning of the History Public Lecture Series and the History Visiting Committee.
Follett's Intellectual Property Bookstore will also present a book exhibit of the History faculty's recently published books. These events are free and open to the public.
Director of the Institute Julie Hardwick is excited about how well the first semester of programs is coming along. The first lecture that the Institute hosted was by renowned Prof. Jacqueline Jones, Truman Professor of American Civilization at Brandeis, who spoke about Savannah in the Civil War on January 25.
On February 8, Prof. Steven Hahn, the Roy J. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of History, at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a lecture titled "Did we miss the Greatest Slave Rebellion in History?: the Haitian Revolution and the Civil War".
