Richard Handler is Director of the Program in Global Development Studies, an interdisciplinary social science major in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia. A cultural anthropologist who studies modern western societies, Dr. Handler previously served as dean of the University’s undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences. He received his doctorate from the University of Chicago.
His initial fieldwork was in Quebec (1976-1984) where he studied the Québécois nationalist movement. This led to an enduring interest in nationalism, ethnicity, and the politics of culture. Upon coming to Virginia in 1986, Dr. Handler pursued the latter topic by looking at history museums. Beginning in 1990, he worked with Eric Gable and Anna Lawson on an ethnographic study of Colonial Williamsburg, which is both an outdoor museum and a mid-sized nonprofit corporation. In addition to examining the invention of history and tradition, the study focuses on corporate culture, class, race, and gender. His publications include Critics Against Culture: Anthropological Observers of Mass Society (University of Wisconsin 2005); The New History in an Old Museum: Creating the Past at Colonial Williamsburg (with Eric Gable, Duke 1997); and Nationalism and the Politics of Culture in Quebec (University of Wisconsin 1988).
Nancy Abelmann is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and the Harry E. Preble Professor of Anthropology, Asian American Studies, and East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Abelmann specializes in the Koreas and Asian America. Her research interests include class, mobility, education, family, migration, mental health, and gender.
Dr. Abelmann is the author of numerous publications, including The Intimate University: Korean American Students and the Problems of Segregation (Duke 2009), and is the co-editor, with Jung-ah Choi and So Jin Park, of No Alternative?: Experiments in South Korean Education (University of California Berkeley 2012). Recent articles exploring the themes of her Texas presentation include "Undergraduate Korean Americans and ’Korean Koreans‘ in the Millennial American University" in Koreans in America: History, Culture, and Identity; "The Domestication of South Korean Pre-College Study Abroad (PSA) in the first Decade of the Millennium" (with Jiyeon Kang) in the Journal of Korean Studies (2011); “A Fraught Exchange? U.S. Media on Chinese International Undergraduates and the American University” (with Jiyeon Kang) in Journal of Studies in International Education (2013); and “Defending South Korean Education Migration Mothers and Humanizing Global Children: Memoir/Manuals of Pre-College Study Abroad” (with Jiyeon Kang) in Global Networks: A Journal of Transnational Affairs.
