2014-2016 Humanities Seminar

Imagined Futures

The Humanities Institute of the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce the 2014-2016 class of Faculty Fellows. Faculty Fellows participate in the Humanities Institute Faculty Seminar, which will meet weekly during the spring and fall semesters of 2015 to explore the theme of “Imagined Futures.” Guiding questions such as “What possible futures do we envision, or what futures were envisioned in the past?” and “How are imagined futures related to the conditions, connections, and limitations of the present?” will unite the Faculty Fellows as they conduct their research and present their work throughout 2015. Faculty Fellows constitute a truly interdisciplinary field, with representatives from the Colleges of Communication, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Education, the McCombs School of Business, the Cockrell School of Engineering, and the School of Architecture.

The Fellows’ research projects are innovative and wide-ranging. Projects include thinking about the future of various disciplines, careers, and higher education itself. Some professors will center their research around the timely topic of imagining a sustainable and socially just future. Others will critically evaluate how important figures and cultures in the past and around the globe have imagined their futures, offering a broadly comparative dimension to the seminar’s theme.

The Faculty Fellows are currently working together to select prominent scholarly and artistic figures who will be invited to the University of Texas as Humanities Institute Distinguished Visiting Lecturers. The Distinguished Visiting Lectures will offer a public talk on the seminar theme of “Imagined Futures” from their own perspectives. The Humanities Institute will announce its Distinguished Visiting Lecturers in the coming months. More detailed information about the new Faculty Fellows can be found here on the Humanities Institute website.

The Humanities Institute would like to thank the University of Texas Office of Sustainability for generously offering to co-sponsor this year's Faculty Fellows. They have also graciously provided the necessary funds for the Faculty Fellows' Graduate Research Assistant, who helps to manage the seminar and blogs about the Fellows' exciting conversations about Imagined Futures.

The Seminar will conclude with a symposium on February 26, 2016, "Imagined Futures: A Humanities Symposium."
