Kassandra Gonzalez, Miles Hutson, and Lenzi Sheible Receive Temple Scholarship
Mon, September 23, 2013
The College's Larry Temple Scholarship Selection Committee interviewed this past Saturday, September 21st, the ten finalists for this year's competition, and I am writing with the happy news that the Committee has awarded Temple Scholarships to Kassandra Gonzalez, Miles Hutson, and Lenzi Sheible. Kassandra, a graduate of Homer Hanna High School, Brownsville, Texas, where she was the salutatorian, is a Liberal Arts Honors sophomore majoring in Humanities. Miles, also a Liberal Arts Honors sophomore, attended Plano Senior High School, Plano, and is majoring in International Relations and Journalism. Lenzi, valedictorian of her Westside High School in Houston, Texas, is majoring in African & African Diaspora Studies and Women's & Gender Studies. She entered the University with some ninety hours of advanced placement and plans to graduate in spring of 2014 and then attend law school.
Some 140 sophomores in the College of Liberal Arts were invited to apply for the Temple Scholarship this year. We received forty applications. The Temple Scholarship stipend is $11,000 and is renewable for two years. The Scholarship seeks those who have excelled in the classroom, have excellent records of leadership and community service, and who have the promise of making significant contributions to society.
The Temple Scholarship honors Larry Eugene Temple, Austin lawyer and public servant. A champion of higher education, Mr. Temple served as Chair of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as well as Chair of the 1985 Select Committee on Higher Education. Mr. Temple has been, moreover, indefatigable in his contributions to The University, serving among his many roles as a member of the Development Board and of The Centennial Commission and currently as Chair of the LBJ Foundation.
