MALS Faculty Mentor Committee

Since its establishment in the Fall of 2014, the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies has focused on institutionalizing the junior faculty mentor process as the main key to successful tenure and promotion. Because we take this charge so seriously, each junior faculty member has two mentors: one in the traditional discipline where the candidate received her/his degree and one in the field of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies. Mentors and mentees meet several throughout the year and are nominally compensated for their service to the profession. It is our hope that mentors will work with the faculty member through promotion to Associate Professor.

Program Requirements:

  • MALS schedules beginning of year and end of year lunch for mentors to meet
  • MALS funds a lunch meeting between the two mutual mentors to set the "mentoring agenda" for the coming academic year
  • Mentors and mentees should hold periodic meetings throughout each semester (2-3)
  • Mentors should help faculty turn the dissertation into a book or a series of peer reviewed articles appropriate for their field of study
  • Encourage mentees to focus on one or two areas within the profession for tenure and promotion legibility
  • Thoroughly discuss the number of articles, books, and other forms of publication necessary to exceed UT Austin promotion and tenure standards
  • Emphasize how faculty with 100% and 50% lines need full knowledge of procedures and guidelines for 3rd year review and going up for tenure
  • Discuss work-life balance issues
  • Annually, mentors receive a modest amount of research funds for serving on the mentoring committee

This is a faculty committee that falls under the rubric of service to the college, as our mentors are faculty throughout the College of Liberal Arts at UT Austin.
