NROTC Program
The mission of the NROTC program is to develop midshipmen mentally, morally, and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty in order to commission college graduates as naval officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the naval service, and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government.
The NROTC Program at the University of Texas at Austin was established in 1940 to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the unrestricted line Navy or Marine Corps. The NROTC program also commissions officers in the Navy Nurse Corps. As the largest source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the NROTC Program fills a vital need in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.
The NROTC Midshipman Battalion at UT has approximately 60 members. The NROTC Unit serves the University of Texas at Austin, Huston-Tillotson University, and St. Edwards University and hosts students from all institutions. The relative small size of our unit enables our staff to personally help midshipmen in every way possible, from offering academic advice and tutoring, to assistance in solving everyday problems. Our unit provides a professional environment which fosters camaraderie and social interaction among the midshipmen and staff.

Selected applicants are awarded scholarships through a highly competitive national selection process, and receive full tuition, books, fees and other financial benefits at the University of Texas. The NROTC Scholarship is available to qualified students who graduate from high school before August 1 of the year they intend to start college. Students selected for the NROTC Scholarship must make their own arrangements for college enrollment and room and board, and take the normal course load required by the University of Texas for degree completion. Additionally, scholarship midshipmen are required to follow specific academic guidelines.
When you arrive at the NROTC unit and the University of Texas, in addition to the normal course-load required by your degree, you will augment your education with a series of Naval Science courses designed to prepare you for a career in the Navy or Marine Corps. Midshipmen also learn military courtesies and protocol. Midshipmen are required to wear uniforms for weekly naval science lab periods and for battalion activities that include formal drill, military science presentations, leadership seminars, career information forums and practical sessions in naval science course work. During the summer, midshipmen take part in summer cruises. This is a unique opportunity for midshipmen to spend four to six weeks each year stationed aboard ships or submarines, with aircraft squadrons, or in the field with Marine Corps units. Summer cruises offer midshipmen an opportunity to get a taste of military life and receive information regarding future service selection in surface ships, nuclear submarines, aviation, special warfare or the Marine Corps.
Upon graduation, the NROTC student is commissioned in the Navy or Marine Corps and will be thrust into a leadership role immediately. The commission signifies completion of the first phase of a new life, and opens the door to a challenging and exciting opportunity to proudly serve your country in the Navy or Marine Corps.
