In this lecture, Professor Christia Mercer explores ideas about dignity, equality, and compassion drawn from early modern Europe’s most innovative women and shows how their radical views laid the groundwork for the so-called radical Enlightenment. She concludes with a call to rethink philosophy’s past in light of these women’s innovations.
