Dolph Briscoe Center for American History Internship

The Plan II Honors Program and the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History collaborated to create an internship program which was launched during the spring 2015 semester.  This internship presents an experiential learning opportunity in a major history research center, with exposure to archival, library, and material culture collections that lend evidence to broad themes in U.S. History.

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is an organized research unit and public service component of The University of Texas at Austin.  Through stewardship, scholarship, and outreach, the Briscoe Center increases knowledge and fosters exploration of our nation's past.  As a leading history research center, the Briscoe Center collects, preserves, and makes available documentary and material culture evidence encompassing key themes in Texas and U.S. History.  Researchers, students, and the public use the collections at the Briscoe Center for a wide range of academic, professional, and personal uses.  The collections also inspire the Briscoe Center's own projects, including books, exhibits, programs, films, and educational materials.

Active within the fall and spring semesters, the internship offers experiences within the Research and Collections Division, primarily focused on processing collections, preservation of collection material, assisting with exhibitions preparation, and working on website enhancement.  The position is not a benefits-eligible one, but the intern will receive a stipend of $1500 per semester sponsored by the Briscoe Center, for which the intern is expected to put in 10 hours of work each week.  The student must be enrolled in a minimum of twelve (12)* hours of coursework and be able to work in the US without restrictions in order to receive the stipend.  The internship will commence in September for the fall semester and February for the spring semester; for both spring and fall semesters, the intern’s work will end before finals begin.

To apply, please submit the following in hard copy format to the Plan II Office (CLA 2.102) or through the Box Submission widget:

- one-page resume
- letter from the student describing his/her interest and qualifications
- letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member or a list of 2-3 professional references; should be from individual/s who can address the candidate's qualifications relevant to this internship

THE 2017-2018 INTERNSHIP APPLICATION IS CLOSED. Applications are under review and applicants will be notified by May 1.

*Students in their graduating semester may be registered for six (6) hours of coursework and employed as an intern. If you believe you will be eligible to take 6 credit hours during the spring 2018 semester, please plan to discuss this option further with Katie O'Donnell, Plan II Academic Advisor, before applying.
