Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life Internship

The Plan II Honors Program and The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life  have partnered to offer an undergraduate reseach internship for Plan II Honors students.  The Annette Strauss Institute, an organized research unit at The University of Texas as Austin, aims to understand and overcome the obstacles to civic engagement through research, education, training, and youth engagement.  The intern will help to support the Institute's research and outreach programming, primarily by conducting research and writing reports. 

The Undergraduate Research Intern position is for the full academic year both fall and spring semesters, during which time the intern will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week.  The intern is not elibible for benefits but will be compensated $1500 each semester, $3000 for the year.  Students must be enrolled in at least twelve hours of course credit during the fall and spring semesters and be able to work in the U.S. without restrictions in order to be eligible to receive the stipend.   Funding is provided by both Plan II and The Annette Strauss Institute.  Note: Continuation of the appointment for spring is contingent upon successful evaluation by the internship supervisor.

Intern Duties:
Reseach -  Assist the Institute's director's of public engagement and educational outreach with research that will support core activities.  Example projects might include documenting civics education curriculum and requirements in Texas public schools; compiling research on the links between youth participation in civic engagement activities and life-long participation; program evaluation; best practices research on addressing low levels of engagement, and/or supporting continued research for the Texas civic health index.  Interns will also be invited to participate in Institute programming.
Event Assistance -  Occasionally assist the Director and staff with planning and preparation for civic engagement outreach events, as needed and directed. 

- Full-time, Plan II student in good standing
- Strong basic research skills
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including writing to deadline and for a variety of audiences.
- An articulated belief in the Strauss Institute mission and an interest in civic life.
- Personable, well-organized, resourceful, mature, reliable and hardworking team player.
- Previous work in an educational, political, or non-profit setting is a plus.

Academic Credit: Students are not required to earn credit but if they wish to may do so through the internship courses offered by Liberal Arts Career Services.

For the 2016-2017 Academic Year the period of appointment will be August 24-December 5, 2016 (fall) and January 17-May 5, 2017 (spring); the on campus location is CMA 7.146.
