The Plan II Alumni book club has met monthly since October, 2006. The diverse membership includes graduates from as early as the 1950s and as recently as 2006. The club meets evenings in the Joynes Reading Room. Members bring snacks, and sometimes invite favorite faculty to lead the discussion. Recent books have included Orhan Pamuk's novel Snow and Colm Toibin's The Master. In January, the club read Waiting For the Barbarians, by South African Nobel laureate J.M. Coetzee, a UT doctoral alumnus. A few days after the book discussion, The Plan II Program organized a group trip to the Austin Lyric Opera's performance of Philip Glass' opera adaption of the novel (the US premier). For March, the Plan II Alumni Book club has selected Mary Karr's 1995 memoir The Liar's Club, which was named by the New York Times as one of the best books of the year.
