Suggested Schedule for Career Planning and Applying to Graduate School


FRESHMAN YEAR

Academic

  • Take all credit by exam test you might have a chance of passing.
  • Meet with academic advisor to plan first-year courses.
  • Look for courses that might be fun or might lead to a major or minor.
  • Ask peer advisors and fellow students to recommend classes and instructors.

Career/Personal

  • Ask yourself what knowledge, skills, and abilities you hope to obtain through a college education.
  • Meet with adacemic and career advisors to discuss career goals.
  • Visit the campus activities office to discover the hundreds of student organizations you can join.
  • Use the services of the Career Center to explore your interests and abilities.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Academic

  • Meet with academic advisor to assess performance and plan second and third year courses.
  • Attend guest lectures and colloquia.
  • Look into requirements for honors programs or courses.
  • Think about minors and double majors.
  • Start major requirement courses.

Career/Personal

  • Select a major consistent with your ambitions and goals.
  • Look up job titles and requirements in the Career Center or PCL Reference Room.
  • Join a campus organization related to your chosen major and/or career.
  • Look into foreign exchange programs.
  • Start your resume.
  • Attend job fairs and graduate or professional school workshops.
  • Do volunteer work or part-time work related to your major or career interests.

JUNIOR YEAR

Academic

  • Apply for a preliminary degree check.
  • Meet with advisor to reassess performance, choice of major, and strategies.
  • Apply for special honors courses.
  • Work with faculty on research and/or independent study.
  • Join major-oriented student groups, honor's societies, or professional organizations.
  • Attend guest lectures and colloquia.

Career/Personal

  • Take a leadership role in campus organizations.
  • Establish rapport with professors for recommendations later.
  • Update your resume.
  • Get elective course credit for research experience (PSY 357), or volunteer work (HMN 101, EDP 369K).
  • Send for graduate or professional school information and applications.
  • Prepare for GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.
  • Register with the Liberal Arts Career Services.

SENIOR YEAR

Academic

  • Complete major work.
  • Apply for final degree check and delcare intent to graduate.

Career/Personal

  • Ask your college placement/career office about scheduling interviews with recruiters.
  • Look for grants, fellowships, and scholarships, for graduate school, at the PCL, Hogg Foundation, or Graduate Studies Office.
  • Take exams and speical tests for graduate or professional school.
  • Ask professors for letters of recommendation.
  • Complete applications.
  • Prepare for professional school or employment interviews.
  • Have resume professionaly printed.
  • Attend regional meeting of professional organization to meet others in your field.
