The Department of Religious Studies is hosting a book release celebration for "America's Church: The National Shrine & Catholic Presence in the Nation's Capital" by Thomas A. Tweed, the Gwyn Shive, Anita Nordan Lindsay, and Joe and Cherry Gray Professor of the History of Christianity in the Department of Religious Studies.
"America's Church" tells a history of 20th-century Catholicism in the United States from the perspective of the National Shrine in Washington, DC, one of the most significant religious sites in American Catholicism. Through a detailed history of the National Shrine, from the laying of the foundation stone to the deep religious meaning it came to have in the lives of ordinary Catholics, America's Church sheds light on the multifaceted and complex landscape of American Catholic culture.
The event will feature a summary of the book and panel discussion with Professors Chad Seales, John Traphagan and Thomas Tweed. A reception will follow.
