NAIS Presents: A Talk by Maya-Ixil Leaders from Guatemala

Wednesday Apr 12, 2017 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM | CLA 1.302E

Two Ixil-Maya leaders, Concepción Santay Gomez and Baltazar de la Cruz Rodriguez, will present a talk titled “La Resolución de la Corte Constitucional sobre la Consulta en Cotzal y la Comunidad Ixil en Guatemala” [The Constitutional Court’s Resolution on the Consultation in Cotzal, and the Ixil-Maya Community in Guatemala].

Concepción Santay Gomez and Baltazar de la Cruz Rodriguez will speak about the movement against megaprojects in the Ixil-Maya Region in Guatemala, and the use of the courts and consultation within these struggles. Santay Gómez and de la Cruz Rodriguez are members of the Alcaldía Indigena of Cotzal, consisted of ancestral authorities dedicated to promoting Ixil culture, identity, rights and the defense of the regions natural resources and territories. They are also co-founders of the Ixil University, a three-year educational program that seeks to instill in students Ixil ways of knowing, values and respect and defense of our territories and natural resources.

This talk will be delivered in Spanish, with a direct translation for the non-Spanish speaking audience by Giovanni Batz—organizer of the event, member of our NAIS graduate community, and a PhD candidate in Anthropology at UT.

The event is open to the public.
