CREEES Spring Fest

CREEES held its annual Spring Festival on Thursday, April 13,
celebrating the cultures and languages of the region
through food, songs and poetry

Students, faculty, and staff filled the Honors Quad on a beautiful afternoon, sampling Slavic fare — an array of homemade potluck dishes brought by students and faculty, and prepared goods generously provided by Borderless European Market, Austin's new East European grocery store — and enjoying the live performances of music and poetry by students.

Highlights included:
  • Nicholas Teale, a second-year student in the Middle Eastern Studies Masters program, who studies Turkish and Russian, singing an aria in Russian (see video here)
  • Lucy LeBlanc and Maria Krychniak of Bernadeta Kaminska's Polish course performing "Piosenka o końcu świata" (Song about the End of the World) by Czesław Miłosz
  • Dr. Yekaterina Severts's second-year intensive Russian class singing a song about friendship "Если с другом вышел в путь" ("If You Start a Journey with a Friend") (see video here)
  • Alia Pederson reciting a Russian poem by Anna Akhmatova
  • Evgenia Wilkins' regular first-year Russian class (pictured) performing Viktor Tsoi's song, "Eighth Grader"
