Cultural Event: SANGAT: An ensemble of musicians from Karachi’s National Academy of Performing Arts and UT Austin’s Butler School of Music

Sangat is a term from Sanskrit word 'saṃgatam’ that translates as “a coming together," referring to an alliance, association, or friendship. We use this term for the group to draw attention to the power of music as a gathering point, and the collaborative and cross-cultural nature of our musical fusions. For our upcoming concerts, Sangat will create a collaborative raga-based fusion of Hindustani classical, Qawali, Pakistani folk music, Karnatak music, Middle Eastern music, and jazz. We will perform repertoires from and blend aspects of these traditions into new musical fusions through our collaboration.

We are very honored to have our guest musicians from National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Karachi, Pakistan to collaborate with composers and musicians from UT-Austin for this concert. Our guest musicians include Intezar Hussain on the vocals and harmonium, vocalists Muhammad Ahsan Shabbir and Nadir Abbas, Arsalan Pareyal on jazz guitar, Muhammad Waqas on tabla, and Stephen Chaman on keyboards.

We would like to acknowledge the support of NAPA in Karachi, and South Asia Institute (SAI) and Butler School of Music (BSOM) at UT-Austin for organizing this ensemble. This ensemble is sponsored by funds from the U.S. Department of State.

Because of the generous support of the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department - Arts and Parks, the concert is FREE and open to all ages!
