“Words are Falling: Poetics of the Bombing of Poems”

By Cristóbal Bianchi (Visiting Scholar at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, NYU)

This talk will present and reflect on the collaborative art action project entitled “Bombing of Poems,” which consisted of the printing of 100,000 poems as bookmarks that were dropped from an aircraft in Santiago, Chile. This talk will examine how this art action not only addressed the relationship between poetry and public spaces—the sky, the city—, but it also touched upon the issue of aerial space, collective memory and violence by evoking the bombing of the presidential house La Moneda by the air force during the coup d’état of September 11, 1973, in Santiago, Chile.

Guest Speaker

Cristóbal Bianchi, an artist and scholar from Chile, is currently a Visiting Scholar in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at NYU and an Adjunct Lecturer in Fine Arts at UT Austin. He earned his PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London. Along with Joaquin Prieto and Julio Carrasco, he founded the Casagrande Art Collective in Santiago, Chile, in 1996, which has been a leading group in the staging of interdisciplinary, local, and transnational collaborative art projects in urban and aerial spaces in Chile, Argentina, Spain, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Italy, and England. As an editor, Bianchi has developed the online platform Observatorio Cultural for the National Council of Culture and the Arts in Chile, and he has also taught at the Universidad Mayor in Chile. Recently, he co-edited the book Pioggia di poesies su Milano/Bombardeo de poemas sobre Milán (2016), which is a selection of the poems that were part of a “bombing poems” performance by the Casagrande Art Collective in the sky of the city of Milan, Italy, in 2015.
