New Faculty, Dr. Kelly McDonough

Professor Kelly McDonough completed the PhD at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2010. She is the author of a book currently under advance contract with the University of Arizona Press, titled Reading and Writing Nahuas: Mexican Indigenous Intellectuals from the Colonial Period through Today to be published in 2013 as a part of the First Peoples: New Directions in Indigenous Studies initiative. In it, she challenges the assumption that indigenous intellectual activities in Latin America ceased or decreased dramatically with the advent of the European conquest and colonization. In addition to this book project, Professor McDonough has co-edited a volume on Human Rights in Latin American and Iberian Cultures, and she has published two scholarly articles: “Indigenous Intellectuals in Early Colonial Mexico: The Case of Antonio del Rincón, Nahua Grammarian and Priest” in the Latin American Colonial Review  and “Estrategias discursivas de la Reconquista y la Conquista” in Confluencia: Revista Hispánica de Cultura y Literatura.

Professor McDonough is a regular participant of the Zacatecas Institute for Teaching and Research in Ethnology (IDIEZ), Associate Editor of the Hispanic Series and Hispanic Issues Online of the University of Minnesota, and a member of the Abya Yala Working Group of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association.
