Language Matters! Graduated Audio: A Model for Scaffolding Listening Comprehension for Language Learners

Join us for Langauge Matters in September when Sarah Whitehead will discuss using what she calls "graduated audio" to scaffold listening compehension activities.

Fostering listening comprehension skills in language classrooms is clearly a common objective.  In her teaching, Dr. Whitehead has found it challenging to help students make the "jump" between understanding listening materials designed for language learners and understanding "authentic" materials that come from the "real world". This "graduated audio" model enables language teachers to work with language students on one audio dialogue at varying levels of difficulty.  This model both helps students' internal processes become more observable to the teacher and encourages students to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses relating to the skill of listening comprehension.  While the model does not prescribe a single pedagogical protocol, it offers listening "texts" that can be utilized in the classroom in a number of ways, many of which will be discussed in this talk.
