Professor Emeritus Robert Fernea, former Director of the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, passed away Friday, December 15, 2017, in California, surrounded by loved ones. Bob’s books include Nubians in Egypt: A Peaceful PeopleShaykh And Effendi: Changing Patterns of Authority among the El Shabana of Southern Iraq; and The Iraqi Revolution of 1958: The Old Social Classes Revisited (edited with Wm. Roger Louis). Together with his wife, Elizabeth (B.J.) Warnock Fernea (CMES and Comparative Literature), who passed away in 2008, he helped bring the Center for Middle Eastern Studies to international prominence.
