Anthropology is a major in the College of Liberal Arts and is part of the Bachelor of Arts degree plan (Plan I). The Undergraduate Catalog outlines the program of work.

In general, catalog eligibility is based on a student’s first semester enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin. Some students may be eligible for a different catalog. The Undergraduate Advisor can help students understand their catalog options.
Major Requirements
The requirements for the Anthropology major vary across active catalogs.
Under the 2014-2016 and subsequent Catalogs, the Anthropology major consists of 33 hours (including 18 hours upper-division and 18 hours in residence) as follows:
- ANT 301 Biological/Physical Anthropology
- ANT 302 Cultural Anthropology
- ANT 304 Introduction to Archaeological Studies I: Prehistoric Archaeology
- ANT 307 Culture and Communication
- 3 hours upper-division Anthropology coursework in each of the following areas*:
- Theory
- Methods
- Culture/Geographic Area
- 12 additional hours Anthropology, including 9 hours upper-division
Under the 2012-2014 Catalog, the Anthropology major consists of 30 hours (including 18 hours upper-division and 18 hours in residence) as follows:
- ANT 301 Biological/Physical Anthropology
- ANT 304 Introduction to Archaeological Studies I: Prehistoric Archaeology
- ANT 302 Cultural Anthropology, ANT 305 Expressive Culture, OR ANT 307 Culture and Communication
- 3 hours upper-division Anthropology coursework in each of the following areas*:
- Theory
- Methods
- Culture/Geographic Area
- 12 additional hours Anthropology, including 9 hours upper-division

Minor Requirements
For the 2010-2012, 2012-2014, and 2014-2016 catalogs, Anthropology requires a minor to graduate. For these catalogs, minors are 12 hours in a single subject, with six of those hours at the upper-division level and six hours in residence. Anthropology students should contact the Undergraduate Advisor to declare a minor. Minors for these catalogs do not appear on transcripts.
For the 2016-2018 catalog, Anthropology requires a minor to graduate. For the 2016-2018 catalog, minors are 15-21 hours. Upper-division hours vary by minor. To learn more about minor options, click here. Some minors require an application. Anthropology students can discuss the process of declaring a minor with the Undergraduate Advisor. Completed 2016-2018 minors will appear on transcripts. One minor per major is allowed. Students may use an approved certificate to count for the minor requirement.
