Azfar Moin, Association Professor, University of Texas at Austin, will speak on the Spring South Asia Seminar series theme, "'Peace with All Religions' (Sulh-i Kull): Indo Persian Political Theology and Cosmopolitanism."

The Mughal empire under the emperor Akbar instituted the policy of Sulh-i Kull, “peace with all” religions or “total peace.” This stance stood in stark contrast to policies of the Mughals’ Muslim contemporaries, the Sunni Ottomans and the Shi‘i Safavids. This seminar series will explore the genealogy and afterlife of this Mughal experiment by inviting a number of scholars from across the disciplines—history, literature, art history, religious studies, sociology of religion—and area specializations—North India, South India, Pakistan, Iran, Ottoman empire, Mongol Inner Asia.

A light reception will precede the event at 3pm.

This talk is FREE! and open to the public.
