Filmmaker Soudhamini will speak on "Sruti: Technology as Inspiration" as part of the Spring South Asia Seminar Series.

Soudhamini will screen clips from her film The Temple Nagawaram (Koyil Nagaswaram - 2013) to explore the theme of "technology as inspiration."

Film synopsis: In the temples of Tamilnadu and some other parts of South India is found a unique musical instrument made of wood and reed known synonymously as the Nagaswaram, the Nadaswaram and more colloquially, the Nayanam.  Nagaswaram players are often associated all their lives with the temples they play in, and initiated into the tradition from an early age become repositories of  immense musical knowledge and insight. Herein indeed lies the beginnings of both classical music and dance in Tamilnadu, at this threshold, never fully crossed till today, between ritual and performance. The film journeys through central Tamilnadu, visiting different temples and meeting the temple musicians there, to archive this rich yet endangered heritage.

The seminar series theme is "Musth: Somatic States in South Asia," convened by Martha Ann Selby, Department of Asian Studies. A light reception will precede the event at 3pm.

This talk is FREE! and open to the public.
