University of Oslo professor to lead short course on South Indian Temple Culture

Over a period on two weeks in February, Dr. Ute Huesken from the University of Oslo, Norway, will teach a short course on South Indian Temple Culture. Dr. Huesken has done field work at South Indian temples for more than ten years. Her second book, /Visnu’s Children: Prenatal life-cycle rituals in South India/ (2009) analyzes specific ritual traditions observed at those temples. She is also the editor of /When Rituals Go Wrong: Mistakes, Failure, and the Dynamics of Ritual/ (2007) and co-editor of a number of other relevant books on ritual. The seminar will meet six times, beginning on Wed., Feb. 3, 6pm. All graduate students and faculty are welcome to attend. This is the first academic event organized in the context of the department's cooperation with the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo, Norway. We plan to organize both student and faculty exchanges and develop cooperative research projects.
