Thu, January 16, 2014

Dr. Martha Selby, Professor and Chair of Asian Studies, has been awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellowship for her project, "Mirrors, Shadows, and City Streets: The Urban Realist Fiction of D. Dilip Kumar." She will prepare translations of the complete works of the celebrated writer Dilip Kumar, the author of two novellas and seventeen short stories.  She will also conduct the research needed to write a substantial introduction, which will include a biography of the author, an analysis of his technique, style, and use of language, and a brief history of the Tamil short story in post-1947 Chennai.

Much to Dr. Selby’s delight, the project requires her to live in Madras, India for the next eight months. She reports this will be her longest research trip since graduate school in the 1980s. Being in Madras will enable her to place Dilip Kumar's work within the larger literary milieu of the city, where she will have easy access to literary journals and reviews in the Tamil language, and where she can also participate in literary conferences and festivals, and attend readings and book releases.
