Biography

Hayley has been a graduate student in the department since 2016. She received her MA in 2018 and is currently writing her dissertation on coinage and identity in Late Hellenistic Roman Sicily. Her interests include the archaeology and history of Sicily, numismatics, the archaeology and anthropology of violence, Roman colonialism and imperialism, culture in the Roman provinces, ancient and modern foodways and food culture, and classical reception.

She has taught courses in the department since 2018, including CC 303 Intro to Classical Mythology WB, AHC 319D Ancient Mediterranean World, LAT 506 and 507 First Year Latin, and CC 307 C Intro to Greek Archaeology WB, and has been the TA for CC 303, CC 302, AHC 319D, and CC 307 D.

This course will introduce students to the physical remains of Ancient Greek culture from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period.  The course will cover all sorts of archaeological evidence, from temples to vases to bones, but it will concentrate on the categories of architecture, sculpture, and painting (especially on ceramics). Through the examination and discussion of this evidence, students will develop a broad knowledge of Ancient Greek material culture, and a sophisticated understanding of the ways we can interpret it.  A focus on stylistic and formal changes and continuities in objects and monuments across time will help us look at long-term issues such as intercultural contact and sociopolitical development.  At the same time, in-depth treatments of particular remains and their contexts will address more specific questions of daily life, art, and ritual.

This course is a continuation of Latin 506.  It has two main aims:  to increase the student's fluency in Latin through reading and close examination of grammar and syntax, and to introduce students to Roman life and culture.

There will be daily assignments from Wheelock’s Latin, including review of Chapters 1-27 and a careful study of Chapters 27-40.  This will be supplemented by further connected readings from Caesar’s Gallic Wars.

Prerequisites:  Completion of Latin 506 or the equivalent with a grade of C or higher.

The course can be completed entirely online, though students must attend three exams either on campus or at an approved testing facility.

"Ancient Mediterranean World" surveys the major civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Italy from the dawn of the city around 3000 BC through the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 400s AD. Beyond providing a basic historical framework, the course explores the surprising ways in which the various civilizations of the area influenced one another culturally. We will examine interactions between Egyptians, Sumerians, Hittites, Hebrews, Persians, Greeks and Romans, among others. Students will also learn about the different types of evidence, both literary and archaeological, on which knowledge of the ancient world is based. There are two lectures and one discussion section per week.

This course is an introduction to Latin, the language of ancient Rome and famous writers like Caesar, Cicero, Vergil, and St. Augustine. Latin is also an excellent way to improve your command of other languages: Latin is the source of over 60% of English vocabulary, and also the ancestor of all the “Romance” languages of Europe, including French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Latin 506 introduces basic grammar and vocabulary in an interesting and challenging format, through reading selections from a wide range of Roman authors and exploring aspects of Roman life and culture.  By the end of the semester, students are reading excerpts from famous works and ready to continue into Latin 507.

The course covers chapters 1-27 of Wheelock’s Latin and also selected readings from 38 Latin Stories. There will be daily assignments, regular quizzes, midterm tests, and a final exam.

Prerequisites: None. Note: This course may not be counted by students offering two or more admission units or any previous college credit in Latin.  

Latin 506 partially fulfills the foreign language requirement. A grade of C or higher is required to advance to Latin 507.

Requirements: Class participation, homework, quizzes, midterm tests, and  a final exam.

Students earning a C or better may advance to Latin 507: First-Year Latin II, where they will read selections from Caesar and other authors.

C C 303 • Intro To Classical Mytholgy-Wb

This introductory-level online course covers the cultural and political history of Ancient Rome, from the city’s origins in the Iron Age (c. 800 BCE) to the rise of Augustus and the rule of emperors in the 1st century CE/AD. Students will have the opportunity to learn about Rome’s evolution from a small, hilltop settlement to the head of a world empire. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the most important buildings, artistic works, events and historical figures of Ancient Rome.

The course can be completed entirely online, though students must attend three exams either on campus or at an approved testing facility. The course is made up of textbook readings, primary source readings, and ten highly interactive, multimedia content modules. Students will be able to work through the modules at their own pace and on their own schedule, within around a 7- to 10-day period per module. Each module includes a practice quiz, so that students can evaluate their progress, identify misunderstandings, and develop strategies for improvement with the help of the course instructor, and concludes with a short, graded, multiple choice quiz. Students will also complete a module and write an analytical essay about a movie based on ancient Roman culture.
