SUSAN SOMERS (M.A. History)

Liberal Arts Council - Outstanding Academic Advisor

The LAC Outstanding Advisor Awards are student-nominated awards that recognize achievement in advising from the perspective of liberal arts undergraduates. Members of the Liberal Arts Council independently choose these winners with a simple goal in mind: name the best advisors in the College of Liberal Arts. We totally agree - Susan deserves this honor. She is the Senior Academic Advisor for the Departments of Classics & Philosophy and also helps out with History students. She advises her many majors and hundreds of students taking classes in Ancient History, Latin, Greek, Classics, Classical Archeology, and Philosophy. The faculty appreciates her knowledge and experience. In a challenging role as one person covering an advising office, her goal is always to be available to students. Yet, somehow in addition, she serves on the Liberal Arts Junior Advising Group (JAGS) where they plan monthly College Advisors' Meetings and special conferences to keep our advisors in the loop regarding important college and university initiatives, procedures, training, and events. Susan cares about her students and is knowledgeable about their programs, on top of knowing and understanding the university. Susan is well respected by her department, her advising colleagues from across campus, and it is fitting that she received this acknowledgement from the hardworking students of the Liberal Arts Council.
