12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

This portfolio plática argues that the established history of negative representation and marginalization of Mexicans and Mexican Americans in American popular culture begins not in film, television, or radio; the Mexican voices we see and hear in our living rooms today have their antecedents on the 19th-century American stage. In her work, Lacey Donohue establishes a clear relationship between early stage narratives revolving around Mexican American characters and the overwhelming popularity of these works in 19th century America, focusing on the works that would later become successful films.
