Dia de Los Muertos Celebration

Mon, November 3, 2008 | Gregory Gym Plaza

Dia de Los Muertos is a day to remember loved ones that have passed away, but more importantly celebrate the lives they once lived. On Monday, November 3, 2008, Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. and a host of student organizations at UT Austin ask that the entire University community to join them in celebrating this momentous occasion as we reminisce and rejoice the lives of our deceased family members and friends. Activities will include a brief procession, candlelight vigil, altar display, live entertainment, and free food.

Schedule of Events:

10:00 - 2:00PM; Gregory Gym Plaza. There will be a writing wall for all to come and reflect on those closest to them that have already passed away.

All Day; Main Mall Lawn. "The Wall of Death," a memorial and visual display of those who have died crossing borders. Walk by the Main Mall Lawn area to see if you notice anything different.

6:00 - 8:00PM; Gregory Gym Plaza. Activities include: free dinner; special performance by UT Betas; scenes from a play entitled "Phantom Discourse" by Adrian H. Molina, which questions notions of old school and new school Chicano culture, community activism and involvement; a candlelight vigil with a brief procession and altar display; and live entertainment from some of Austin and UT's finest Latino performing groups: Son Armado, Texas Latin Dance, and UT Ballet Folklorico.
