Forty years ago, the Kerner Commission said the causes of race riots in 150 American cities were unemployment, poverty and discrimination against black Americans. The news media contributed because they “reflected the biases, paternalism and indifference of white America.” News outlets responded by examining their content, hiring and promotion practices, seeking to become more representative of society.

Fred Harris, former U.S. Senator from Oklahoma and a member of the original Kerner Commission, discusses what transpired then and what has changed since.
