Teacher Concientización: A Study of Academia Cuauhtli Community Revitalization and Identity Reclamation

This porfolio plática by Brenda Rubio explores the schooling experiences of bilingual and dual-language Latina/o educators who teach in a fourth- and fifth-grade Saturday academy, Academia Cuauhtli, founded by members of Nuestro Grupo, a community-based, language and cultural revitalization project in Austin, TX. Academia Cuauhtli is an “additive,” culturally relevant, social justice learning space that promotes the curricular recognition and teacher professional development of alternative epistemologies and the development of pedagogies that recognize and foster the students’ culture, language, and funds of knowledge. The study examines through oral narrative inquiry the personal and professional lives of Cuauhtli teachers and explores the impact of the academy on their critical consciousness and the reclaiming of their cultural and professional identities.

Brenda Rubio is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Educational Administration with a Graduate Portfolio in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies. Her supervisor is Angela Valenzuela, Professor in the Department of Educational Administration.
