Programming

The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) facilitates all public programming in Latino Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. This includes the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS) and the Latino Research Initiative (LRI).

CMAS offers an extensive programming calendar that enables the University and the community at-large to learn more about the Mexican American and Latina/o experience in the United States and beyond. This programming calendar includes events or functions hosted by CMAS, MALS, or the LRI, those organized by other campus units, and activities that take place in the community.

Plática Series – Presentations given by invited guests and visiting scholars.

PláticArte Series – Presentations given by performance and visual artists, writers and musicians.

Community Plática Series – Presentations and workshops given by community-based organizations in Austin or the Central Texas region.

Faculty Research Plática Series – Presentations given by faculty affiliates of CMAS or MALS faculty.

Graduate Portfolio Plática Series – Presentations given by students participating in the Graduate Portfolio Program in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.

New Faculty Lecture Series – An annual presentation given by a new faculty affiliate of CMAS or a faculty member of MALS.

Postdoctoral Fellow Plática Series – Presentation given by a recipient of the Carlos E. Castañeda Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mexican American Studies.

Student Research Plática Series – Presentations given by students participating in the Master of Arts degree Program in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.

Américo Paredes Lectures and Awards – An annual presentation given by an eminent professional or scholar or an individual whose artistic contributions have made a significant contribution to the field of Mexican American and/or Latina/o Studies.

MALS Graduation and CMAS Reception – An annual event that celebrates the accomplishments of participating student graduates and allows them to recognize their family and friends.
