CMAS hosts College Chica Summer Camp
Latinitas empowers young Latinas using media and technology

On June 12, 2017, Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) kicked off its inaugural summer camp, College Chica, with 20 young middle schoolers from across Central Texas. This incredible collaboration with Latinitas, a local non-profit that empowers young Latinas using media and technology, helped in continuing our mission of advancing Mexican American studies through high-quality programming, faculty research support, student engagement and community outreach across Texas and the nation. Our College Chica camp was a three-day camp that exposed students to introductory courses in Mexican American history, culture, folklore, theatre and youth leadership. Campers met with UT students to learn about their journey to college and had the opportunity to engage in authentic dialogue about the challenges, as well as successes they encountered. UT students did an amazing job in empowering these young girls to see UT as a future home. In addition, campers took a tour of the Visualization (VISLAB) Laboratory to learn about cutting edge technology being created and used at UT-Austin. The lab is a state-of-the-art facility that serves as a research hub for UT students. Campers also toured our beautiful campus and learned about the various programs UT offers! College Chica would not have been successful if not for the many volunteers that helped out, especially our UT alumni and students, Alia Hernandez (McCombs School of Business, Alum), Alejandra Zendejas (College of Natural Sciences, Alum), Juan Belman (College of Liberal Arts, Alum), Samuel Cervantes (College of Liberal Arts), Lucero Estrella (College of Liberal Arts), and Elena Perez-Zetune (College of Liberal Arts).
