On Monday, February 19, LBJ Law School professor Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto lead a conversation with María del Rosario “Rosie,” Julián, and Joaquín Castro about the importance of family, education, and politics.

Julián Castro, former San Antonio mayor and former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Congressman Joaquín Castro (D-20) credit their mother, Rosie, for their success in politics.

As a strong advocate for education, Rosie encouraged her children to focus on their studies while fighting for the educational rights of Latinos.

Reminiscing about how their mother used to take them to rallies and protests, the Castro brothers have been inspired by her legacy in their own political careers.

The importance of voting and advocacy for marginalized communities was a key theme throughout the event, which was hosted by the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) and co-sponsored by the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS), the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE), and the Educational Leadership and Policy (ELP)Department of the College of Education.
