CMAS Announces Parternship With Barrio Writers

Wed, June 6, 2012

The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) is pleased to announce a partnership with Barrio Writers, which will include hosting a one-week summer program at The University of Texas at Austin, from August 13 to 17, with a public reading scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2012.

Additionally, The Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection and Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) are showing their support by introducing the summer program with a community event on August 4, 2012. The event, which will include a panel discussion focusing on diversity in higher education, will also include a diverse range of organizations to discuss pathways to higher education and introduce the Barrio Writers summer program to the participating students.

The Barrio Writers program is focused on teen-age participants and consists of free workshops and additional one-on-one tutoring throughout the academic summer break, with monthly cultural arts events during the school year. Through these workshops and events, students build their skills in reading, grammar, creative writing and freedom of expression through the cultural arts.

The writing workshops are designed to empower the teenage community while establishing a self-sufficient educational program that will represent community pride, perseverance and endless possibilities for following generations.

One goal of the program is to publish an anthology collection of written works demonstrating the diverse backgrounds of teenagers. All profits from the book will be returned to the Barrio Writers program for future years. The long-term goal is to publish a new edition each year with hopes that more neighborhoods will adopt the program.

Barrio Writers chapters are currently established in Santa Ana, California and Austin, Texas but are seeking to develop more chapters on university/college campuses.
