Abu Nasr Alfarabi (d. 950) is considered the founder of philosophy in the Islamic world. Highly regarded by his fellow Muslim as well as Jewish successors, he also came to be acclaimed by Christian thinkers. What he accomplished and why it is important are the themes addressed in this lecture. Of special significance is the way Alfarabi carried on the philosophy begun in ancient Greece by Plato and Aristotle.
