Jonathan Swift's essay A Modest Proposal is one of the most famous works of satire in the English language. In it, Swift draws on rhetorical traditions stretching back to Classical Antiquity to acidly mock the callous response of Englishmen of his day to the immiserating poverty of the Irish. While written nearly three hundred years ago, this essay's themes of inequality and social stratification remains relevant today.

The essay can be read online here. It can also be found in various anthologies of Swift's writings available at the main library.
Due to a scheduling conflict, this week's book club has been moved to Wednesday, 11/4, at 5 PM in Waggener 403B.
