Lunchtime Seminar: Prophecy and Political Emancipation

Thu, November 1, 2018 | BAT 5.108

12:30 PM

Professor Maurizio Viroli of the Department of Government will be speaking on the topic "Prophecy and Political Emancipation." Here is the topic:

In the history of Italy prophecy has inspired and sustained visions, hopes and struggles for social emancipation in the later Middle Ages, in the Renaissance, in the Risorgimento and in the antifascist Resistance. Decline of prophetic spirit and prophetic language marked instead the centuries of Italian political servitude (1550-1800). Without prophecy, social and political emancipation is almost impossible. Prophets, history teaches us, urge peoples to choose principles of justice and to attain thereby moral liberty (the inward liberty of the persons who lives by the principles that their own conscience dictates); inspire the most generous of their compatriots to work with their fellow; give the moral strength to fight even when hopes to win are slim.
