Was Marx Right?

In the State of the Union address, President Trump assured the nation that the U.S. will never be a socialist country. With Democrats shifting further and further to the left by advocating for universal healthcare and a Green New Deal, the ideas of socialism in the U.S. are becoming more widely discussed.  In order to understand these modern conversations about modern issues, it's important to study the beginnings of these systems. We will do so by discussing the work of the original socialist, Karl Marx.

In his writings, Marx made several observations about the shortcomings of capitalism and why it should fail. Texas Political Union invites you to a discussion on Marx's critiques of capitalism as we ask ourselves if the points he made were and are valid? Are there flaws in capitalism and if so, can and should these flaws be fixed? What is this best way to change a system? Can capitalism and democracy coexist?

Here are some background readings to understand Marx's thought and the evolution of socialism:

Communist Manifesto Ch. 1 - Bourgeois and Proletarians

The Economist on the relevance of Marxism
