Gender Performance Workshop

Fri, November 18, 2011 | SAC 3.116

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Gender and Sexuality Center at the University of Texas at Austin will be hosting its fourth annual Gender Performance Workshop. The event serves to create a fun, safe space for the exploration of gender, where everyone is encouraged to try different gender personas on for size. Wigs, make-up and other fun props will be provided to prompt creative experimentation with the way gender is constructed and performed.

In past years the GSC has brought in specialists who work with drag kings and queens in Austin to help sculpt appearances, whipping up five o’clock shadows and turning short hairstyles to long tresses. “The first year I think I left with a mustache and red fingernails,” laughed Shane Whalley, the education coordinator for the Gender and Sexuality Center.

The workshop, Whalley said, is “for people to come and be silly.” But it also serves to provide an important space for people who may be questioning, exploring or transitioning genders to have a comfortable, playful outlet for that process.

“Not presenting your gender in the way it’s expected is not always treated well,” Whalley said. The Gender Performance Workshop is a forum for those issues, as well as a safe environment for building community and being playful.
