"Get up mari Dudu, get up!" - Reconfiguring Gender and Roma ("Gypsy") Identity through Political Discourses in Western Turkey

Fri, April 13, 2007 | MEZ B0.306

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Song Lyrics: "Get up mari Dudu, get up! Tie your village apron around your waist! Make coffee for the men Make the beds and lie down"

As suggested by this title taken from a 1970s popular wedding song, Rom and non- Rom men's voices speak for Roma women. How do cultural practices shape constructions of gender while also participating in constructions of ethnic identity? This presentation considers these questions in light of recent emergent political discourses imposed via the European Union accession process in Turkey.
